(A downpour, a single umbrella. Two strangers, shoulder to shoulder, in spite of themselves.)

ELLE

Can I stay under yours till the corner? Mine turned inside out and died a hero.

LUI

Of course. Careful, it leaks on the left. Historically, the side of people I don’t like.

ELLE

Then put me on the right.

(He moves her.)

LUI

There. The side of people I’ve just met and am watching closely.

(They walk. The corner approaches, too fast.)

ELLE

This is my corner. Thank you. You saved me from urban drowning.

LUI

…The thing is, my actual way is the other direction. I made this whole detour because I hadn’t finished my sentence.

ELLE

You hadn’t started a sentence.

LUI

Exactly. Give me another corner to start it.
