(A queue on the pavement, late at night. Two people, one behind the other.)
ELLE
What are you queuing for, then? Nobody knows anymore. We’re all just following the person in front.
LUI
No idea. I saw a queue, I thought: there must be a reason. A good queue never lies.
ELLE
So we might be waiting for… nothing.
LUI
Or the best thing of our lives. That’s the beauty of queues: the suspense is free.
(The queue moves one step. They move, in sync.)
ELLE
If there’s nothing at the end, I’ll hold it against you for life.
LUI
Then let’s hope there’s something at the end. Otherwise we’ll have spent an hour together for nothing.
ELLE
“For nothing.” We’ll see about that.
