(A cooking class. Two strangers share the same worktop and a single pan.)
NILS
Right. The chef said “finely chopped.” Can you do “finely”?
AVA
I can do “in pieces that exist.” “Finely” is propaganda.
NILS
Then we make a formidable team. You destroy the onion, I cry for two.
(The pan starts to smoke. Neither reacts at first.)
AVA
…Is this normal, this smoke?
NILS
In our culinary marriage? Absolutely. It’s our signature.
(They lift the pan off together, hands on the same handle.)
AVA
Our dish is inedible.
NILS
Completely. But we’ve created something together. A disaster. And the first disaster brings people close.
