(A night-train compartment. Three strangers. The conductor clips tickets without looking at them.)

LE CONTRÔLEUR

Tickets. …No, keep them. They’re all valid. They always are, on this train.

ROMÉE

Where exactly are we going? There are no names on the signs outside.

LE CONTRÔLEUR

One destination. Everyone gets off at the same place. No one misses their stop here. Restful, isn’t it?

KAI

I was in hospital, before I got on. I remember the machines. Then a corridor. Then this platform.

ROMÉE

For me, the wet road. The headlights. And after that, nothing, until this compartment.

(A silence. Each one understands, one after another, what the others have already understood.)

KAI

…We all got on the same night, is that it.

LE CONTRÔLEUR

The same night, yes. You’re not alone. No one makes this journey alone. It’s the only truly kind rule in the world. Settle in. I’ll come back at the last stop.
